Description

The Associate Chemist will support the needs for product development and production support/failure analysis for the HTV group. Products include silicone gum, High Consistency Rubber(HCR), and Liquid Injection Molded Silicones (LIMS)

  • Formulate HCR compounds designed to perform to certain requirements/specifications.
  • Plan/organize Design of Experiments (DOE) to optimize product performance and troubleshoot issues with a product.
  • Work closely with production teams/process engineer(s) to be an expert on production processing of gums, HCR, LIMS.
  • Safely operate all equipment in the Technical Service & Development (TS&D) lab, including but not limited to: banbury mixer, dough mixer, Moriyama mixer, 2 roll mill, 3 roll mill, extruder, and heated press.
  • Maintain TS&D equipment (mixers, mills, extruders).
  • Conduct physical testing using tensometer, durometer, rheometers, viscometers, and other pieces of analytical equipment.
  • Research new raw materials introduced by vendors and work with vendors when problems arise with already used/qualified raw materials.
  • Conduct Technical Service Requests submitted by sales such as molding samples and running special tests.
  • Work closely with HSE group to ensure all TS&D equipment is compliant with SESA safety standards.
  • Travel overnight to trade shows, customers, etc. as needed (less than 5%).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other related area required.
  • Experience in polymer chemistry and/or formulation chemistry is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good knowledge of material properties and analytical testing techniques.
  • Good verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in groups and be self-motivated in both settings.
  • Ability to work effectively with other groups within the organization.
  • Ability to take direction and carry out instructions from the manager in an orderly and efficient manner.
  • Capable of proactive approach to identify and eliminate potential problem areas.
Work Environment
  • This position operates primarily in a laboratory environment.
  • The role routinely uses the following tools and equipment: tensometer, durometer, rheometers, viscometers, banbury mixer, dough mixer, Moriyama mixer, 2 roll mill, 3 roll mill, extruder, heated press.
Physical Demands
  • Stands or walks 4hrs/day or more
  • Lifts up to 50lbs
  • Works near or with mechanical and computerized equipment
  • Handles hazardous materials & non-hazardous chemicals (organic solvents, fillers, silicones, silanes, catalysts, etc.)
